Greenville, SC - One of football's greatest coaches, Vince Lombardi, said "Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work." The Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce sponsors Leadership Greenville, a program designed to develop informed, committed, and qualified individuals capable of providing leadership for our community.
As a graduate of Leadership Greenville Class 32, I recommend this program to those of you who are interested in enhancing your leadership skills and making a personal commitment to improving the Greenville community. I enjoyed this experience, made lasting friendships, and renewed my commitment to community service and leadership.
The Leadership Greenville program begins in August each year with an overnight retreat and continues for nine months with one-day sessions each month, ending with an overnight retreat and graduation in May. The one-day sessions include topics such as managed growth and the economy, quality of life, human services, local government, the justice system, education, and state government. The class members help prepare the material for each one-day session and each class member is involved with a community improvement project.
Since Leadership Greenville began in 1973, there have been approximately 1,500 participants, with an annual class size of 50. Many Leadership Greenville alumni have served in key leadership positions in our community, including city council, county council, school boards, Congress, and the judiciary. Leadership Greenville builds a network of community leaders through education and involvement while addressing the concerns and issues of Greenville County.
Interested persons are required to submit an application, and participants are selected by a committee on the basis of their past community involvement, and their ability to achieve high personal goals. The selection committee also considers the level of responsibility of each applicant in their chosen career.
Cost for the program includes $1,925.00 for tuition expenses, to be billed upon acceptance into the class. While participants are required to secure their own funding, it is anticipated that employers or other involved organizations may be willing to help with this deductible business expense. Partial scholarships are also available.
Leadership Greenville applications are due by Monday, June 2, 2008. If you are interested in this program, you may contact Sandi Coan at 864-239-3723 or scoan@greenvillechamber.org.
