Training & Development

Associate Training Program

The firm’s success depends on the success of our associates. Our extensive associate training program helps young lawyers develop practical trial and advocacy skills that otherwise take years to cultivate. GWB provides a formal in-house training program that covers topics such as Taking Effective Depositions, Cross-Examining Experts at Trial, Business Development and Marketing, and a variety of other topics. The firm also sends its litigation associates to trial academies sponsored by the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA), and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association (SCDTAA). GWB associates also receive constructive feedback during biannual reviews conducted by the firm’s Associate Committee.

Mentoring

GWB believes that the development of its associate attorneys and their ability to provide excellent service and support to the firm's clients is critical to being a successful firm. To assist associates, GWB pairs each associate with a partner outside the associate’s practice area who serves as the associate’s mentor. The mentor provides support and guidance during a lawyer’s tenure as an associate. The associate can turn to the mentor at any time for advice on any issue, from the practice of law to developing business and professional contacts and clients.

Partnership Track

GWB prides itself on hiring future partners, not just lawyers. Every new associate at GWB comes to the firm understanding that every day worked at GWB is an investment in their future and that the end goal is the reward of partnership. Currently, a new associate may be considered for partnership after seven (7) years if the associate has fulfilled his/her firm obligations and has met all of the partnership criteria. GWB firmly believes that our associates are the future of the firm.

Community Service/Pro Bono

GWB is a long-standing, respected member of the Greenville community and the South Carolina Bar. Accordingly, we take an active role in civic and professional organizations and emphasize giving back to the community through Community Service/Pro Bono commitments.
