Heroes Ready When Duty Calls

Picture a large fire with a person in the middle - wearing nothing but a protective suit between the person's skin and the flames. Picture another person crying for help and nothing preventing that person from being seriously injured or killed in the fire except for the bravery of the person with the protective suit.

Now picture an assailant with a weapon, a pistol or a knife. Picture a person being held at gunpoint or at knifepoint while another assailant steals money from the victim. Picture another person being called from the comfort of home or office to defuse the matter, arrest the individuals responsible, and secure the victim's safety.

Picture a person of unquestionable integrity and loyalty to our safety working in an environment of constant stressors: sirens, flashing lights, fires, serious automobile accidents, floods, crime scenes, to name a few. That person provides the initial emergency medical care to those who need it in critical situations.

Now picture this courageous person being your father, mother, sister, daughter, son, or brother. The men and women of the fire departments, police departments, and medical response teams are nothing more than the fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters of Upstate South Carolinians. They put their lives on the line for the citizens of Upstate South Carolina on a daily basis for very little in return. They deserve more.

The Wills for Heroes program is a free "no strings attached" legal assistance program which was originated in Columbia, South Carolina by Anthony Hayes, Esq. Attorneys from local firms in the Upstate rallied to this program and volunteered to meet with police officers, firemen and Medical Response Teams to provide them with simple wills and to say thanks to the Upstate's true heroes for their sacrifices. To date, over 600 free wills have been provided to our local heroes.

The South Carolina Defense Attorney's Association and the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina Bar Association encourage local fire departments, police officers, and medical response teams to take advantage of this free service by calling (864) 271-5433 if you are interested in participating in this program or scheduling a session to prepare a free will. Upstate attorneys and staff are dedicated to providing this free service for our local heroes. It is worth a phone call. The only thing that the attorneys and their staff may ask for in return is to climb on the fire truck or peek in the police car.

Local heroes - please take advantage of this program.
