Did You Hear The One About The Lawyer?

By H. Mills Gallivan

Who freely gives his or her time to serve as a guardian ad litem for a minor or an incompetent person?

Who spends his or her Saturday mornings in a fire station, providing free wills to our first responders, as a part of the "Wills for Heroes" program?

Who is willing to represent an individual or corporation in an unpopular cause because they, too, have rights?

Who, without pay, represents the downtrodden because it is the right thing to do?

Who, over a career, spends countless hours on the phone answering questions for individuals who never call back?

Who understands that the American system of Justice is our greatest achievement as a society and our most precious individual right?

Who has taken an oath to defend the Constitution of South Carolina and the United States?

If you have not heard the one about these lawyers, then you do not know the members of the noblest profession.

The Greenville County Bar Association is currently celebrating Law Week, a national period of observance set aside to celebrate the rule of law in our society. This year the theme of Law Week is: "The American Jury: We the People in Action". The following activities are planned to celebrate law week in Greenville:

* A blood drive;
* An awards ceremony for high school essay writers and for a non-lawyer who most advanced the cause of justice in our county;
* A wills clinic;
* A debate on tort reform;
* A golf tournament benefiting Safe Harbor; and
* A 5k Run in Cleveland Park benefiting the Youth Court project of the Greenville County School District.

On May 13th, as Law Week concludes, The Honorable Jean Toal, Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, will swear in Daniel B. White, Esq., as the 2005- 2006 President of the South Carolina Bar. Danny has been practicing law in Greenville County for over 25 years. He will be taking time from his complex litigation practice to represent the 10,000 plus lawyers in South Carolina and to further insure access to a fair and balanced judicial system for every South Carolinian.

The attorneys, staff and friends of Gallivan, White & Boyd, P.A. congratulate Danny White, our new South Carolina Bar President, and we applaud his outstanding service to the legal community and the citizens of South Carolina.
