Curtis Ott Begins Term as President of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association
GWB is pleased to announce that firm partner Curtis L. Ott was sworn in as President of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association (SCDTAA) November 7, 2013. Curtis has been on the SCDTAA Board of Directors since 2003. He served as SCDTAA Secretary in 2011, Treasurer in 2012, and President Elect in 2013. Curtis states, “I am very grateful to have the opportunity to serve my fellow defense attorneys throughout South Carolina. I am excited about the possibilities of what can be accomplished over the next year.”
in 1968, the SCDTAA has grown to over 1,000 attorneys statewide. The SCDTAA’s mission is to assemble lawyers
in South Carolina who devote a substantial amount of their practice to the
defense of civil litigation matters.
Additionally, the SCDTAA provides the opportunity for members to exchange
ideas, techniques, procedures, and court rulings related to the handling of defense
litigation. These opportunities will
ultimately lead to the enhancement of the knowledge and skills of defense
With over 20 years of litigation
experience, Curtis centers his practice on complex litigation defense is the
areas of transportation, product liability, and appeals. From his trial and appellate experience,
Curtis is extremely familiar with all aspects of litigation, the venues, the
attorneys, mediations, and the nuances of South Carolina law. He has tried 75 cases to verdict in state and
federal courts as well as briefed and argued before the South Carolina Supreme
Court and the South Carolina Court of Appeals. Curtis has represented a wide
array of clients throughout his career often including clients from the
automotive, trucking, and industrial equipment industries. He is also listed in
prestigious publications including Best
Lawyers in America for commercial litigation and product liability and South Carolina Super Lawyers for product

GWB Earns the Defense Research Institute's Prestigious Law Firm Diversity Award
Gallivan, White & Boyd, P.A. has been selected to receive the 2013 Defense Research Institute's (DRI) Law Firm Diversity Award. Established in 2002, the award is given annually by the DRI to a law firm that has shown exemplary progress and achievement in its diversity program. The award recipient must demonstrate a commitment to diversity which is evidenced by a formal diversity plan, sensitivity and receptivity to diversity issues, and promotion and advancement of minorities and women within the firm. The DRI Board of Directors states, “Gallivan, White and Boyd's commitment to diversity is demonstrated not only through their policies and practices, but also by their many civic contributions.”
GWB has dedicated itself to the principle that continued growth of its business is dependent on attracting and retaining highly-qualified diverse employees. The firm has diligently and deliberately worked to promote diversity throughout the firm in both its hiring and retention practices. Jennifer E. Johnsen, a shareholder and former member of the firm’s Executive Committee, chairs GWB’s Diversity Committee. This committee is comprised of members representing all facets of the firm’s work force - associates, shareholders, administrative staff, and legal support personnel. GWB is a founding member of the Diversity Recruitment Consortium, in which organizations work together to develop innovative programs, practices, and processes to increase the diversity of professional and executive talent in South Carolina based organizations.
Participation in the South Carolina Diversity Leaders Initiative, presented by the Riley Institute at Furman University.
Active leadership and participation in professional and community organizations, such as the Urban League, the United Way’s Leadership Affinity Groups for Women and African Americans, and the National Bar Association.
Firm diversity awareness programs which feature guest speakers and leaders within the field of diversity.
Internal “Sharing Our Story” articles that feature different members of the GWB team, highlighting what makes them unique and renewing dialogue among employees about diversity.
The impact of these programs is evident in the firm’s current demographics. GWB is currently comprised of 145 employees from 23 different states and 5 countries. The firm’s 67 attorneys hail from every region of the country, attended 26 different undergraduate institutions, and 16 different law schools. Managing Shareholder C. The 2014 rankings are based on the highest number of participating firms and highest number of client ballots on record. To be eligible for a ranking, a firm must have a lawyer listed in The Best Lawyers in America, which recognizes the top 4 percent of practicing attorneys in the US. Over 12,000 attorneys provided over 330,000 law firm assessments, and almost 7,000 clients provided close to 20,000 evaluations. In addition, to provide personal insight, a new Law Firm Leaders Survey was implemented in the decision-making process.

T. David Rheney was selected as Best Lawyers’ 2014 Greenville Personal Injury Litigation - Defendants "Lawyer of the Year." Rheney’s law practice focuses on insurance, tort and personal injury, transportation, products liability, and professional negligence. He is the South Carolina representative for Insuralex, an international association of attorneys that center their practice on insurance and reinsurance law issues, as well as a member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association, International Association of Defense Counsel, American Board of Trial Advocates, Defense Research Institute and the Trucking Industry Defense Association. Rheney is a past Best Lawyers’ Greenville Insurance Law "Lawyer of the Year" as well as being recognized as a South Carolina Super Lawyer and receiving the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Rating.
Gray T. Culbreath was named Best Lawyers’ 2014 Columbia Bet-the-Company Litigation "Lawyer of the Year.” Culbreath concentrates his law practice on products liability, business and commercial litigation, transportation, class actions, and professional negligence practice areas. He is a member of American Board of Trial Advocates, Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, and Lawyers for Civil Justice. Culbreath is a past Best Lawyers’ Columbia Mass Tort Litigation/Class Action - Defendants "Lawyer of the Year" as well as being annually recognized in South Carolina Super Lawyer.
Thomas E. Vanderbloemen was selected as Best Lawyers’ 2014 Greenville Litigation - Intellectual Property "Lawyer of the Year." Vanderbloemen assists clients in pursuing, defending, and resolving disputes concerning patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and technology, and also handles other related intellectual property matters. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Carolina Patent, Trademark & Copyright Law Association, is a registered patent attorney, and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Vanderbloemen received the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Rating and has been recognized in South Carolina Super Lawyer and Greenville Business Magazine’s Legal Elite.
